Random Thoughts

The "Run for the Lights" event in downtown Grand Haven was wonderful.  The crisp, winter night prompted me to set a pace much faster than normal just to stay warm.  I was also glad that I decided to wear my Yaktrax since much of the icy 5-kilometer course was along the boardwalk and through the state park.  Congratulations to Darren Riopelle and his team for a well-organized event. I finished in 25:53.

My current challenge is to survive the next several weeks of Hackley Health Managment Boot Camp.  This challenge of maintaining "in the box" meal replacements, minimum fruits and vegetables, and a minimum amount of physical activity (PA), should enable a return to my goal weight of 170 pounds.  However, my discipline has been lacking some and social events seem to "corrupt" the boot camp experience.

Speaking of corruption.  Stress in the educational world always seems to mount about this time of the year.  With assessments to complete, report cards to prepare, conferences to schedule, and several school improvement projects on my plate, the stamina/focus required for teaching seems to take away from my fitness endeavors.

Lastly, I am only a few weeks away from one of those decade birthday celebrations.  I am attempting to put a positive spin on this aging thing.  If you'd like to join me for a 6-mile run on my 60th birthday, feel free to check out the 6@60 event on Facebook and gear up on Saturday morning, March 16, at 9:00.

The Sad Truth

As I listened to Marcia Geisenger speak on the importance of exercise last week, I also heard her say that nutrition is a key element in the complete package of good health.  She said that some people think they can basically eat anything as long as they exercise.  Not.  It's difficult to nearly impossible to exercise yourself out of poor nutritional habits.

Health Educator Lisa Kraus of Hackley Health Management recently shared that 68.8% of all Americans are now considered overweight.  Among that group, 35.7% are obese or morbidly obese.  So, do the math.  The sad truth is, that leaves a mere 31.2% of us who maintain a healthy weight.

Recent studies have shown that when it comes to losing weight, diet and exercise are most effective when done together rather than either strategy alone.  What thought do you give to the quality of calories that you consume?  After all, not all calories are created equal.

Coca-Cola's idea of a calorie and my idea of a calorie are not the same.  How can you compare 100 calories of broccoli with 100 calories of Coke?  I recently shared "The Honest Coca-Cola Obesity Commerical" with my fifth grade students. You might want to take 2 minutes to view this video.  The sad truth is, many companies like this have no ability to promote "coming together" in regard to the American obesity epidemic.

Give me my broccoli and an afternoon of cross-country skiing.
